Adams Family Christmas 2007

Where to begin. It was a real Adams Family Christmas. The December celebration known to some as Christmas and to us as the four weeks of Gracie's Birthday is finally behind us. What a trip. I am still tired. Thanks to Mom for being such a great hostess. No Christmas would be complete without a few of my favorite food groups. This year, thanks to Cynbad, we had all of them--except Krispy Kreme donuts. Maybe next year. We all had a wonderful time. Gracie loved her birthday party. The space jump was awesome! Those pictures aren't included here, but hopefully Libby Lu will forward them on. Gracie The Flying Princess must make the blog. Gracie probably summed it up best the night before we left to come back to Selmer, "Dad, I sure did have fun with your Mom."

And of course Christmas morning was fabulous. I really liked the stocking stuffer and the present from Evie. Anita Beth had a good time too, though she has started frequently grabbing her ear lobes and muttering "my preciouses", while spending vast amounts of time shut up in the closet with the lights out. Not sure what brought that on. Gracie just wants to go back to Big Brake. Turns out deer hunting with Diego is her idea of a perfect afternoon. As you can see from the pics, Addie wasn't hard to please. We can't wait for the next Adams family Holiday. Next time, there'll be FIVE of us!

Christmas at Granny's

We had pizza and presents at Granny's house last night. Gracie is stacking them deep. Presents I mean. She has now had two birthday celebrations and a Christmas. More to come. So far she really seems to like the baby doll. She slept with her last night. She named her Audrey. Addie came out well too. She got some blocks and watch. Her favorite thing to do with the blocks is to put them in the bucket and then dump the bucket over her head. She tries to wear the watch like a pair of sunglasses. We're working with her.

It was an eventful and exciting Thanksgiving holiday. Obviously, everyone now knows about the new calf. Friday, AB and family decorated the entire house for Christmas in one giant swoop, complete with our first fake pre-lit tree. It saved about two hours of decorating and allowed me to focus on the Ole Miss game, which was awful. I'm glad he was fired. And then Gracie got the stomach bug. We think Orgeron caused the illness by choosing to go for it on Fourth and 1 with a 14-0 lead and 8 minutes left in the game, but that's just speculation. Sunday morning, Addie followed suit--on the way to church. Luckily, we were in two cars. I took the little belly-button monster home and AB, Gracie, Brian and Iris made it to church. The illness did save me a trip to the Memphis airport yesterday. Addie and I had some good bonding time. She is now a huge football fan. Somehow AB and I have remained bug free. For now.

Thanksgiving 2007

We welcome to the Farm, Henrietta, daughter of Maude. She was born Thanksgiving night around 8:30 pm. Gracie and I went to get a look at her in the daylight this morning. She's a cutie. Still a little gooey. When she fluffs up I'll post more photos. We are expecting two more calves soon. Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.

The Cat and the Bee

Not much time for a post, but pictures tell 1000 words, so you guessed it... Halloweed is here. Gracie is a cat and Addie is a bee.

For those of you keeping score at home, Gracie has woken up the last two nights and come downstairs. Last night she tried to climb in our bed. Fun fun. I miss my good little sleeper. I thought if I threatened to buy her a crib like Addie I would make a point to her, but it backfired...she got excited about it.

I bought myself an iphone a couple weeks ago and I have been testing out the camera. Cindy sent the girls these cute little outfits and so I tried to snap some pics this morning. The iphone does not have a flash and is a tad slow. When you have a two year old and one year old as your subjects you need quickness and a good flash. Enjoy the proof.

Newsom

Les Newsom (RUF Ole Miss) preached at Trinity Sunday. His Sunday School lesson has really stuck with me the last 24 hours. The lesson was on suffering and the scripture reading was from I Peter 1. In Christ we can only be tested by fire, but not burned.

"in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you(AE) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven,(AF) things into which angels long to look." I Peter 1:12

The angels long to look at God's plan of salvation and the work of Christ. Jesus took on the full wrath of God so that in our suffering, if we are in Christ by faith, we cannot be burned by the fire. We will survive into eternity. Any suffering we endure is but temporary, no matter what or how bad it may be! One day we will be...

before the throne of God,
and(U) serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne(V) will shelter them with his presence.
16(W) They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
(X) the sun shall not strike them,
nor any scorching heat.
17For the Lamb in the midst of the throne(Y) will be their shepherd,

I could say so much about this lesson, but alas, I must go bill some hours. Praise be to God our Father who loves us so much that he undertook to pour his full wrath on his own Son in order that we may one day be with him. And he will wipe away every tear from our eyes.

Sleeping Disorder

Everyone who has ever spent any time with us the last two years knows the Lord blessed us with a couple kids who love to sleep. AB and I always joke that its because the Lord knows our limitations--that we would never be able handle having a bad sleeper. Well, we're about to find out. It seems one week of sleeping with Mom in Uncle Brian's small New York apartment was enough to totally disrupt two years of blissful uninterrupted rest. Ever since Gracie has been home she has been scared of the dark. The other night she begged me to sleep with her. She told me she was scared the dogs would bark (I know, it didn't make sense to me either). Later that night I heard the pitter patter of feet and heard the door to her room slam, but I was in the middle of a Monday Night Football game so I waited a few minutes to go check on her. I walked upstairs and she wasn't in her bed or in her room! My heart skipped a beat, but then I looked out in the upstairs living room and she was curled up asleep in the chair. She was so out that she didn't stir when I picked her up and took her to bed. As I layed her down, without opening her eyes, she grabbed my arm. I gently moved it and she slept through the night.

Wednesday, Savanna (the nanny) said Gracie did not nap well at all. She would wake up screaming and tell Savanna she was scared.

Last night at about 3:30 I awoke with a start, hearing the sound of feet pounding across the upstairs floor. I walked upstairs to find Gracie sitting at Anita Beth's desk--wide awake! She said "Hey Daddy!" as though it was time for breakfast.

This morning, for the first time that I can remember in her short life, Gracie came downstairs before I went up to get her. Not good.

Note to parents everywhere: DO NOT EVER SLEEP WITH YOUR CHILDREN! IT CAN ONLY LEAD TO TROUBLE!

So much for my perfect little sleeper.

Special Family Time

Rachel sent me some pictures from the week that we gathered as a family to be with and remember my grandmother, Evie. It was really a special time. We were so blessed to be able to come together as a family to say good bye to dear Evie. Libby and Brian traveled all the way from Savannah twice, once to tell Evie they loved her and once again the next weekend for the funeral. Seeing them two weeks in a row was really great. Funerals are actually a weird mix of sadness, sorrow, and joy. It is fun to be around people you love and don't see very often. I guess that is part of the reason we have funerals. God gives us community to love one another and be with one another. Imagine how sad it would be to say good bye to someone if you were all alone. We really are blessed.

New York

AB took the kids to New York last week and somehow didn't come home with any good pics for me to share. Here are the highlights as I know them:
1. They visited the Bronx Zoo where Gracie and Grannie rode a real live camel together.
2. So much asian food was consumed that Anita Beth came home requesting American food.
3. Gracie got carsick in a taxi on the way to visit our friend Cory and Kari Jo and soiled herself and Addie. Luckily KJ had a washing machine. Gracie said she "throwed".
4. Gracie got her own digital camera. She takes my picture now.
5. Addie, Gracie, and AB rode the Farris Wheel.
6. They all rode the subway.

Guys Weekend

I joined my buddies Kirk, Ryan, and Matt for a guys weekend in Oxford. We saw Ole Miss almost beat Alabama. What a heart-breaker. I think we were robbed. Obviously the guy that posted this video does, too.




After the game we hit the Grove. Luckily, beer still tasted good. And co-eds were still pretty. After an hour or two of that we headed to the car, which was parked in Matt's "secret" parking spot. As we rounded the corner to where his car should have been parked, we were a little shocked to observe that it was very noticably missing! The towing company was nice enough to leave a sign with telephone number on the curb where Matt's car should have been. When Matt called the wrecker service guy told him that for the low low price of $125 he could have it back. He even offered to come pick ole Matty up.

While Matt was bailing his Tahoe out, the rest of us hit this great bar on the square called the Library. It was around when I was in school ten years ago, but not near as cool. They had TV's everywhere. I don't think I would have ever left if it had been around when I was in school. What a great place to watch games. We saw Kentucky upset LSU and Auburn's narrow victory over Arkansas. I am looking forward to another guy's weekend.

Evelyn Grace

This has been a sad time at our house. Gracie's great-grandmother is almost gone. We drove to Jackson for the weekend to say our goodbyes. Gracie gave Evie a big kiss on the forehead and said, "I love you Evie" with her best smile. Evie seemed to smile and said, "I love you, too." It was a precious moment that I want to memorialize. Addie was there too, contributing joy in her own way, mostly just by looking cute and posing for more chocolate chex from Pam Pam. Of course, Anita Beth and I both told Evie how much we loved her. I read Psalm 139 to her and she seemed moved by it though it was hard to tell.

Anita Beth and Gracie love Evie so much, which I find so endearing. Gracie has never known Evie outside of a small sanitary room in a nursing home and yet Gracie loves going to see Evie. St. Catherine's village is "Evie's House" to Gracie. Anita Beth's first memory of Evie is watching Tennessee win the national championship on her sofa back in 1999, when we were still engaged. I had taken her to Evie's to show off my my bride, score some visited with grandmother points with Evie and Mom, and simulateously catch some college football action. I am so self-centered. Anyway, Anita Beth has always been good at making conversation with Evie, one-sided though it may be, when I could not think of anything good to say and just wanted to look at the television for an escape. I did have a chance to share my favorite memory of Evie with her last weekend on one of our visits. It's when I was 15 years old and just starting to drive. She let me drive her all the way home to Jackson from Destin in her big Lexus--fully equipped with a radar detector. I'll bet the speedometer never read anything below 80 the whole way. She never said a word other than, "You sure are a good driver Jake." That was a great day for me. We will all miss Evie. We love you Evie and we know we will see you again one day someday, in glorification.

Monday we drove home to Selmer. That night Granny brought the girls ballerina outfits. They created some good picture opportunities.

Well, I probably don't have to tell most of you that the last month has been a crazy one. For the record, I'll document a few things. AB is expecting in April! The girls are growing fast. Little Addie is just walking all over the house and everywhere else. There was another journey to visit Elmo and his friends. Our friends John and Paige had a baby boy last week. His name is Jack. And AB and I are involved in the biggest trial in our lives. At least thus far. I would write the name of the trial but am afraid the blog would start showing up on google. There is lots of excitement everywhere. Enjoy the pictures.

Addie's First Birthday

Addie turned One Saturday. I can't believe it. She got a baby grand piano and a motorized jeep and various other stuff. Poor kid. We also had the pleasure of having Garner and Cindy up for the weekend. Gracie and Garner and Addie chased each other around the house, went for a swing and a slide, saw the cows and watched a Dora marathon. The party Saturday night was fun. Dad and I cooked alot of hamburgers and all the aunts and uncles came over. Addie felt well celebrated. Sunday afternoon Gracie returned to Jackson with Cindy and Garner. We're going to get her Friday.

Independence Day!

Fourth of July cookouts are becoming a bit of tradition here in Corinth. We spent the 4th at John and Paige Frame's cooking ribs, sipping cool drinks, eating ice cream and shooting fireworks. My ribs weren't nearly as pretty as John's, but I had a good time cooking them. The highlight for Gracie was the sparklers. If she burned one sparkler she burned twenty (in a row). The highlight for Addie was going to bed. For me it was hanging out with Frame and cooking ribs all afternoon while partaking the occasional beer.

For the third year in a row Big John hit the firework stand and put on a good show for everybody. After each explosion Gracie would yell, "Do it again Big John!"

Looking forward to next year.

And by unprofessional, I mean, I took them, not my sister Libby, "the artist". There are a few good ones. Obviously alot of fun was had. The sailing trip was probably the highlight, but just watching the kids each day was a blast. I am ready to go back! Who wants to chip in on a trip back to beach?

There is nothing like a week at the beach. The trip was so relaxing, and I know we had fun because the time breezed by too fast. Our days consisted of swimming, naps, walks on the beach, eating and early bedtimes. The highlight was probably sailing with Uncle Bailey and sneaking into the Grand Hotel swimming pool. Libby took these pictures. Aren't they great?

Memorial Day Weekend

We had a great Memorial Day weekend. Saturday morning we hung out at the pool, swimming and chomping down blueberry muffins.

Saturday night we hosted Tim and Erica Noyes for a cookout. They brought their daughter Maddie. Gracie loved her. I don't think we saw Gracie more than a couple times the whole night she was so enthralled with Maddie. Maddie, please come back to our house sometime!

David Simmons also joined us Saturday night. Sadly, I didn't get a picture. He preached for us at Trinity Pres Sunday and did a stellar job. It was good to hang with David again. David spent alot of time going back and forth to Iris's barn looking for Davy the cat. He didn't have any luck.

Sunday we spent the afternoon on Hallie Kate's boat, as Gracie calls it, at Pickwick. We had a good time with April and David and their family. Gracie loves boating. She spent alot of time on the bow of the boat making sure the wind blew her hair. Very cute. I forget my camera so I don't think I have a good picture, unless April emails me one.

Monday was cooking day. AB spent the whole day cooking for the month. And then that night we went to Savanna's house for dinner. Her parents wanted to meet us before we took her to the beach. Again, Gracie had a blast. They were good folks.

The lasts few mornings Addie has been waking up at 6:15 and crying. I try to tune it out, but eventually go upstairs to find Gracie lying in her bed, thumb in mouth, looking as though she is trying to sleep through Addie's persistent wails. But I know better. Gracie is reaching into Addie's crib and swiping her pacifier each morning. This makes Addie furious, and it wakes Dad up early. Not sure whether it wakes up Mom. If it does she doesn't let on. This morning shortly after Addie started crying I heard the sink running in Gracie's bathroom. When I finally went upstairs, Gracie, told me she had washed Addie's pacifier, as if she had done us a favor. Sure enough all the pacie's were laid out neatly by the bathroom sink. She is so helpful.

Sooo.... You come here often?

Meet Gladys, the new heifer here at the ranch. She and Donkey are getting to know each other well these days. When Gladys is not busy chatting it up with Donkey you can find her running from Benny the Bull, who would like to become her baby's daddy. We also picked up a kitten a couple weeks ago named George. He and Gracie are really hitting it off. He will let Gracie just scoop him up and carry him around. Somehow he knows better than to stick a claw into her. They're pretty cute together.

I hope everyone had a Happy Mothers Day. Not much to report up here. We are now officially in pool mode. Gracie went swimming Saturday and Sunday, and I bet she'll be in the pool this afternoon. She also tried to give Addie a pony tail this morning. It didn't take.

KODAK DIGITAL CAMERAS ARE NOT WASHABLE

Shocking I know, but the Kodak digital camera cannot withstand the wash 'n spin, hence, no pics. Plenty has been happening. I have been very busy at work, as has Anita Beth. The girls continue to grow. I expect Addie to start crawling any day now. I had my first kidney stone. Very fun. I am happy to report it has been flushed down the toilet after two weeks of discomfort intermingled with severe pain.

Granny's Birthday

Gracie and AB made cupcakes. As you can see, Anita Beth is feeling much better now. Thanks for everyone's concern and help and meals.

Not much new going on. I have been slaving away on a 1500 piece swingset for Gracie and Addie that Iris was kind enough to buy them. When it is finished I am going to retire from practicing law and go into swing set construction. I will certainly feel like I have accomplished something. I will take some pics soon.

Other developments. This morning after AB finished getting Gracie's clothes on the wiggly worm, Gracie said, "Don't I look adorable Mommy?"

Also, Tuesday night after we put Gracie to sleep AB and I tuned into a little American Idol. About 30 minutes into it we heard movement coming from the direction of Gracie and Addie's room. AB went to investigate. When she opened the door, Gracie was standing just inside and whispered, "Mommy, I want to hear the singers." Who could resist that?

Gracie, Addie and Savanna had a Tea Party this morning before me and AB left for work. Oh what fun.

Jackson

I recovered the family from Jackson this weekend, where they enjoyed their weeklong stay at Cindy's Rehabilitation and Daycare, LLC. I am glad to have everybody back and am considering getting a DVD player for the car before I take another four-hour road trip with Gracie. She will talk your ear off! Also, I have learned my lesson and will fill the fuel tank before embarking on the next trip. Stops for gas make for short naps. Not good. Nonetheless the little people were happy to be home last night. Anita Beth was too. Back to the routine I hope.

Saturday Gracie and I took a "field trip" to Ashewood Farms, the farm where I bought our cow, to look at "baby cows". We had a good old time. Some pictures are attached.

Gracie has been a huge help this week in Anita Beth's recovery. She regularly walks into Mommy's room and offers encouraging words and kisses for her belly. "It's okay Mommy," she says. Then she climbs up on the bed, kisses Mommy and says, "You feel better," followed promptly by "Dora, I wanna watch Dora. Dora Daddy. Dora." She knows how to get what she wants.

Anita Beth is feeling a little better. The Doctor warned us that her recovery would be slow. I would say it will be another week before she starts to feel herself again. This morning her Mother took her to visit her Doctor in Memphis and Mom stayed home with the girls. You won't believe this, but the nanny called in sick this morning! Life can be truly comical.

Anyway, I know most of you only tune in for the pictures so I posted a few new ones.

Adams Girls on the Mend

Okay, just so this whole weekend is recorded in internet history. My mom finally did arrive Sunday afternoon only to promptly notify me that she felt nauseous.

But good news. Everybody is feeling better today. Both girls seem to be healed. Gracie helped me feed the cows yesterday - always a good indicator of health. Addie ate like a little human garbage disposal this morning. Anita Beth accompanied Mom and the girls to the park this morning - her first trip out of the house since returning from the hospital.

WE'RE GOING TO PRAISE GOD WHEN WE WIN AND WE'RE GOING TO PRAISE HIM WHEN WE LOSE

AB and I watched Facing the Giants last weekend. The movie's premise is that we are here to Glorify God and Enjoy Him Forever, but the underlying point is that we do it even when all is bleak.

Well this week, all was bleak. Anita Beth had an eptopic pregnancy that could have killed her and it required surgery and a stay in a hospital two hours away. She was suffering great pain and anguish for hours and I was not there for her. When I finally did arrive there we spent two nights and three days in a hospital room far from home and from our kids, and for a cherry on top of the cake when we returned home both our kids had RSV.

Saturday both kids were miserable and AB could not get out of bed because of the pain, and my mother in law, who usually is too helpful, got a bad case of the stomach flu.

Yep, it was bleak. I made it though the day somehow. As I sit here on this beautiful Sunday morning I am thankful to God that he pulled Anita Beth through a very scary surgery. That he provided Mary Burns to sit by her side in the ER and hold her hand, a sweet lady from the Henry County Chancery Court who did not even know AB but was there for her when she needed someone the most. That Iris was able to care for Gracie and Addie and get them to the Doctor. That I made it though Saturday without killing the children. That their health appears to be on the mend. That my Mom is coming this afternoon with big steaks for the grill and the promise of some relief! And for the warm sun shining through the window.

Thank you Father. I do not know why any of this has happened, but you are sovereign and I know it is for the good of all of us who love you. I praise your Holy Name. Please help me Glorify you and Enjoy you forever.

Update

We hosted a dinner for church Saturday which was really fun. The house was full of people and everybody seemed to have a good time. Coincidentally three people were ill the next day, but it had nothing to do with the food. All the illnesses were easily explained away, however, church seemed like it was exclusively for single parents Sunday morning.

The big news is the arrival of our new bull "Bennie". He is huge and he is on loan from the guy I bought my cows from. Gracie is very excited to have Bennie living with us.

Another Crazy Day

This morning I let Addie roll off the bed. I feel terrible. She is okay, but she has a goose-egg on her forehead. However, I will say, if she would quit waking everybody up before sunrise the whole thing might not have happened. She would not have been in the bed with me to roll off would she learn how to sleep one extra hour. But that's of little consolation, it feels pretty rotten to let the little cute baby hurt herself.

I felt guilty for not having any kid photos on yesterday's update so I snapped a couple this morning as we loaded up for work/school. Gracie is definitely a Southerner. She does not understand the need for coats, scarves, or hats. Meanwhile Addie chilled in her new car seat.

Addie has woken everyone up at 6 am the last two mornings. Gracie is about to kick her out of her room I'm afraid. She was not happy with her this morning. The funny thing about little Addie is that she herself does not wake up. She just moans over and over again such that she wakes all around her up. So this morning it was Dora at 6am in Mom and Dad's room.

Mom and Dad Take a Vacation

We had a great time in Lake Tahoe last week. The break was nice, but we were both happy to see the girls when we returned Saturday night. Here are a few pics. I am only in one of them because I don't like asking people to take our picture on the slopes. It means you have to ask someone to drop their poles, take their gloves off, get their skis in position, etc.... Luckily some nice guy volunteered for the lone shot. It was a beautiful place. We ate some good food, slept late, skied til the lifts closed most days, watched movies, went to the movies, and we discovered Anita Beth is really good a Roulette. Enjoy the pics. Hey, I'm Addie

Addison celebrated her six month birthday last week, and she has had a real coming out party. Her personality has positively blossomed the last two weeks. She is sitting up and grabbing at toys and eating like there is no tomorrow. I have assured her that there is a tomorrow, but she does not seem to care. We love our rolley polley. Also inside is a pony tail picture of Gracie.

Gracie wore her hair in a pony tail last night. Dad had technical difficulties with teh camera. It was very cute. Pictures to follow.

Merry Christmas to all! We had a fun one this year. It was our first Christmas in our own house. Gracie really got into opening presents. Santa Clause brought her a kitchen and a subway sandwich kit, both of which she loved. Christmas afternoon she insisted on taking her ketchup and mustard bottles with her to nap. She and Addison both got lots of attention from the family. But the one who racked up, as AB would be quick to tell you, was me. Santa bought me a new watch, a Blackberry Pearl, and a wife who loves me enough to let me buy a 40 inch Samsung LCD. I am not sure what I am going to tell AB when she meets this new wife.
